Our Story

Welcome to Gambia International Arriving from Gambisara Lamoi, Gambia to Seattle, Washington in 1994, the Tunkara brothers´┐ŻBubacarr and Muhamed did not know what to expect. They had found themselves to be in the midst of rapidly-growing African and Muslim communities in this Pacific Northwestern city, particularly in Southeastern Seattle. What they soon learned, however, was that there were very limited means to access local African goods, and no African grocers were established to serve and accommodate this growing community.

Motivated by the growing demand of members from the diverse African diaspora, as well as the desire to introduce African goods and foods to new markets in the greater Seattle area, the Tunkara brothers responded by opening up their store, Gambia International, Inc., in the spring of 2000. Despite its name, Gambia International includes foods and goods originating from a number of countries in West Africa, North America, and South America, including Islamic gifts and paraphernalia.
